This week's Good Facility is a cycle street (or fietsstraat) on the outskirts of the Dutch city of Utrecht.
For motor traffic this is a dead-end street, allowing only access to the properties on the right of the photograph. But for cycling this is a major route into the city centre. While motor traffic has to stop at the end of the street, a cycle route continues, passing directly under the A2 motorway as it skirts the city. The motorway bridge is visible in the distance.
As with all good cycle streets, therefore, motor traffic levels are extremely low. The street is surfaced in smooth red asphalt (signifying a cycle route) and comes with street lighting to help ensure social safety 24 hours a day.
