Easy crossings of major roads are an essential element of good cycling infrastructure. Often these will take the form of grade separation; either bridges or underpasses.
This example, however, is an at-grade crossing. Here five lanes of motor traffic - on the city of Assen's ring road - are crossed in one go, directly, with no stagger. A push button is provided, but there is an also an induction loop to detect the presence of people waiting.
Not quite as safe or as convenient as grade separation, but where at-grade crossings are provided, it is important to get these kinds of details right.
