This week's Good Facility is an example of simple, safe, side road design, giving priority to cycling (and walking).
This cycleway in Utrecht passes across a side road without interruption - a clear continuous strip of smooth red asphalt. The footway is also continuous, making it clear to drivers they are crossing an area where they should yield to people walking and cycling.
The cycleway is also continuous at a raised level, meaning drivers have to negotiate a ramp to cross it. There is a clear waiting area before they join the road, meaning drivers can also deal with the cycleway and the road in two separate stages, for safety.
Finally this side road is also exit-only for motor traffic (while two-way for cycling) - reducing the number of potential conflicting movements at the junction.
