Good Cycling Facility of the Week: 25th June 2015

This week's facility is an 'autoluwe' or 'nearly car free' area in Gouda.

Although the street is shared with motor traffic, the road network is designed in such a way as to deliberately keep motor traffic very low. In this particular case in Gouda, this street only serves as an access route for a small number of properties, while remaining open in all directions to pedestrians and people cycling. 

Combined with street features designed to slow motor traffic speeds - no centre line, a cobbled surface, and changes in geometry to ensure the street is not straight - these arrangements ensure that the street is safe and attractive enough for young children to cycle on.
