This week's Good Facility is a cycling and walking underpass in the Dutch town of Lent in Gelderland.
This wide cycleway (with separate footway) passes directly underneath a major road, on a shallow gradient, providing a direct and delay-free connection between Lent and the city of Nijmegen via a cycle bridge across the Waal river. The path has its own street lighting (visible to the left of the footway) and has clear sightlines, to maximise social safety.
Although this underpass is impressive, it is in reality a 'byproduct' of a junction upgrade for motor traffic. The underpass was put in place simply to remove cycling and walking from the junction and to increase its efficiency.
