This week's Good Facility is an area-wide filtering scheme in the London Borough of Waltham Forest - part of their extensive 'Mini Holland' programme.
Francis Road used to be a busy B-road carrying around 5,000 motor vehicles per day. It has now been converted into an attractive, safe and calm neighbourhood thanks to the removal of that through traffic, and design interventions such as those shown in the photograph. A continuous footway runs directly across what used to be an open junction (see Streetview for the former layout). The road now consists of opposed one-way flow for motor traffic, but with cycling permitted in both directions.
Trees, cycle parking, benches and street furniture are all part of the redesign - it's not just about cycling!
