This week we are featuring a new bicycle (and pedestrian) bridge in Lent, north Nijmegen - Het Groentje, or the Little Green One. (It's so new, the Streetview link does not show it, or the current situation!)
It's a wide, smooth and attractive bridge over a new ring road, with very shallow approach ramps to make it easy to cycle over. But it is not an isolated piece of infrastructure. It forms merely a part (a useful part) of a wide, smooth and fast bicycle route that runs north out of the city of Nijmegen. The bridge is in place purely to ensure a nice, safe continuous route, without having to interact with motor vehicles on the ring road.
Pretty bridges have to be functional too, forming parts of useful networks, designed to high standards.
