This week's Good Facility is a standard bi-directional cycleway in the Dutch city of Assen. This cycleway is part of a pair, with an equivalent cycleway on the far side of the road. This is conventional alongside larger multi-lane roads in the Netherlands, as it allows journeys to be made in the 'wrong' direction without the inconvenience of having to cross the road.
As can be seen from the photograph the cycleway is wide enough to allow side-by-side cycling in both directions. There is forgiving kerbing between the cycleway and the footway, maximising the effective width of the cycleway and minimising the risk of crashes.
The cycleway is well-separated from the road by a large grass verge (and with new tree planting) and has its own street lighting.
