In a few weeks time, our cyclists will be showing the world on the road and on the track that Britain is a force to be reckoned with on two wheels. Yet in the very city that's hosting the Olympics, just as London needs people to cycle more than ever if we're to avoid gridlock on the roads, cycling is being progressively marginalised. Closing the Lea Valley Towpath for the duration of the games - and well before - is just one of a string of Olympic stories about how bikes are being treated like a problem instead of a solution. There's no really safe alternative to this route for bikes meaning more people will switch to the car or overloaded public transport for the duration.
So please, join the Open Our Towpath campaign's demonstration tomorrow, Sunday the 15th July. The organisers say:
Meet at the carpark of Princess of Wales pub in Lea Bridge Rd, Clapton, E5. We will walk down to the site of the closure.Bring some picnic food to share, a cheap hi-vis vest if you have one you aren’t particularly attached to, and as many friends and neighbours as you can!Be there!
