A staging diagram is a way of visually demonstrating the permitted phase movements in a series of stages, making up one complete cycle.

Arrows are used to indicate permitted movements; the T-bar markings are used to indicate when traffic or pedestrians are held. In the above example from
The Ranty Highwayman, in stage 1 and 2 two pairs of arms run together, while stage 3 has all arms held while pedestrians have an 'all green' stage. Pedestrian, cycle and motor traffic movements/phases can be coloured separately, for clarity.
